SKEENA NEWS REPORT — A young black bear cub discovered in “dire need” in northeastern British Columbia is being hailed as a “Christmas miracle” after a harrowing rescue and a 700-kilometre journey to safety.

The cub was found huddled at the base of a tree, covered in snow, near Dawson Creek. Upon arrival, rescuers noted a disturbing detail: the female cub appeared to have been severely burned, with her fur, face, and feet scorched. Experts suggest the bear may have been burned while hibernating, possibly due to a fire that reached her den.

    The Eight-Hour Race Against Time

When the call for help reached the Northern Lights Wildlife Society (NLWS) in Smithers, the situation was critical. A volunteer was immediately dispatched from the society’s headquarters, embarking on a grueling eight-hour drive through winter conditions to reach the cub.

“We’re forever grateful that she was found and we’re given the opportunity to give her a second chance,” said society co-founder Angelika Langen in a social media update.

    Verification and Status Update

Skeena News has verified this report. The rescue took place in late December 2024, with the cub’s progress being monitored through the 2024–2025 holiday season.

    • Current Health: The cub is “doing well” and responding positively to treatment at the Smithers facility.
    • Injuries: While her feet and face were scorched, veterinarians believe her survival is likely with continued care.
    • Long-term Outlook: The Northern Lights Wildlife Society specialized in rehabilitating orphaned cubs for release back into the wild. If her recovery continues as expected, she will likely be returned to her natural habitat once she is strong enough.

    Community Support

Langen expressed deep gratitude to the public and social media followers for sending “good vibes” and support during the rescue. The society relies on volunteers and donations to maintain its operations, particularly for long-distance rescues like this one.

The “Christmas miracle” bear has become a symbol of resilience in the B.C. interior, highlighting the vital work of wildlife rehabilitators who monitor the province’s vast and often dangerous wilderness.

Supporting the Northern Lights Wildlife Society

The NLWS is a non-profit organization located in Smithers, B.C., and relies heavily on public contributions to facilitate long-distance rescues like the “Christmas miracle” bear cub.

    • Donations: Financial contributions help cover the high costs of specialized veterinary care, food for growing cubs, and transportation fuel for rescues across the province.
    • Volunteer Opportunities: The society often utilizes volunteers for various tasks, including the critical transport of animals in distress from remote locations to their headquarters.
    • Social Media Advocacy: Following and sharing their updates helps raise awareness and generate the “good vibes” and visibility that support their fundraising efforts.
