SKEENA REGION, B.C. – Residents of the Skeena region with upcoming travel plans on Air Canada are advised to be aware of a potential labour disruption that could affect flights as early as mid-August.
Air Canada’s flight attendants, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), are holding a strike vote that will conclude on August 5. If a new collective agreement is not reached in the coming weeks, a strike could begin as soon as August 16, potentially causing flight delays and cancellations.
For the Northwest, where air travel from the Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat (YXT) is a primary link for business, medical appointments, and family connections, it’s important for travellers to understand the situation and their options.
Understanding Your Rights as a Passenger
Should a strike occur and your flight is cancelled, Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) provide certain rights.
While airlines are not required to pay cash compensation for disruptions caused by strikes, they are still responsible for getting you to your destination. According to air passenger rights advocates, if your flight is cancelled, the airline must rebook you on another of its flights or a partner airline.
If they cannot find a new flight for you that departs within 48 hours of your original departure time, they are required to book you on a competitor’s airline at no extra cost. Alternatively, you are entitled to a full refund if you choose not to travel.
The Status of Negotiations
The main points of contention in the negotiations are wages and compensation for unpaid work. The union states that flight attendants perform many critical safety duties during boarding and deplaning for which they are not currently paid.
In a public statement, Air Canada noted that a strike vote is a standard part of the bargaining process and that the airline remains committed to reaching a fair agreement with its flight attendants.
Negotiations are scheduled to resume next week. In the meantime, travellers with flights booked for mid-to-late August are encouraged to monitor news updates and check directly with Air Canada for the latest information regarding their flight status.
