OTTAWA — Federal climate scientists are sounding the alarm for the year ahead, projecting that 2026 is on track to join the ranks of the hottest years ever recorded.

In a news release issued Monday, January 19, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) revealed that global mean temperatures are expected to sit between 1.35°C and 1.53°C above pre-industrial levels. If these projections hold, 2026 will rival the extreme heat seen in 2023 and 2025, trailing only 2024—the current record-holder.

Even more striking for residents of the Northwest is the long-term outlook: ECCC forecasts that the five-year window from 2026 to 2030 will likely be the hottest half-decade in human history.

Northern B.C. Warming at “Double the Rate”

While the global numbers are staggering, the impact is magnified in Northern British Columbia. According to ECCC data, Canada is warming at twice the global average, with northern latitudes heating up even faster.

For the Skeena and Bulkley Valleys, this “persistent warmth” translates to more than just a few extra beach days at Lakelse Lake. Local climate models for Terrace and Kitimat suggest that by mid-century, the number of “summer days” (over 25°C) will more than double.

“Canadians are already experiencing the impacts of a changing climate, from extreme heat to increased risks to communities and infrastructure,” said Julie Dabrusin, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change.

    The 1.5°C Threshold: A 12% Gamble

The forecast indicates a 12% probability that 2026 will temporarily breach the 1.5°C threshold established by the Paris Agreement. While a single-year breach doesn’t mean the treaty has failed, it signals that the world is moving dangerously close to a permanent “new normal.”

The primary drivers of this heat remain greenhouse gas emissions, though scientists noted that 2026 is expected to begin in a “neutral” phase following the cooling influence of the recent weak La Niña. However, a potential return to El Niñoconditions later in the year could push 2027 into even more extreme territory.

    Preparing the Northwest

The B.C. government has been readying its Provincial Heat Alert and Response System (BC HARS) in anticipation of another summer of extreme heat. Following the deadly 2021 heat dome, the province has focused on:

    • Enhanced Monitoring: Rapid extreme weather attribution to link heat events to climate change in real-time.
    • Infrastructure Resilience: Funding for cooling centers and heat pumps in rural and Indigenous communities.
    • Wildfire Preparedness: Strengthening forest management as higher temperatures dry out local timber stands earlier in the season.

“Building climate resilience is not just a moral obligation; it is an economic imperative,” the ECCC statement noted, highlighting that 2026 will be the 13th consecutive year that global temperatures have exceeded the 1.0°C mark.
