For most people, the marathon is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. For Fauja Singh, it was a challenge he didn’t even begin to tackle until he was 89 years old. In a world obsessed with youth, the man affectionately known as the “Turbaned Tornado” completely redefined the limits of age, endurance, and the human spirit, becoming a global icon in the process.

Born on April 1, 1911, in the village of Beas Pind, Punjab, during the era of British India, Fauja Singh lived a quiet life as a farmer. His story as a running phenomenon didn’t start in his youth; in fact, for nearly nine decades, it didn’t start at all. The catalyst was not ambition, but profound personal tragedy. In the 1990s, after losing his wife and then witnessing the death of his fifth son, Kuldip, in a construction accident, a heartbroken Fauja Singh moved to London to live with his son, Harmander.

Overwhelmed by grief and searching for a purpose, he needed an outlet. He had always enjoyed walking, and with the encouragement of his new community, he decided to start running. At an age when most are well into their retirement, Fauja Singh laced up his first pair of proper running shoes. He found a coach, Harmander Singh (no relation), and channeled his sorrow into the steady rhythm of his feet on the pavement.

His progress was nothing short of miraculous. In 2000, at age 89, he ran his first competitive race: the London Marathon. He didn’t just participate; he began to break records. His crowning achievement came in 2011 at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. At 100 years of age, he became the first centenarian in history to complete a full 26.2-mile marathon, crossing the finish line in 8 hours and 11 minutes. While Guinness World Records did not officially ratify the record due to the lack of a 1911-era birth certificate, the world watched in awe, and his achievement became legendary.

His lifestyle, a testament to simplicity and discipline, became as famous as his running:

    • Diet: A strict, simple vegetarian diet rooted in his Punjabi upbringing. He favors phulka (flatbread), dal (lentils), fresh green vegetables, yogurt, and milk. He attributes much of his stamina to ginger and curry.
    • Daily Routine: A devout Sikh, he rises early for prayers, followed by walking and running approximately 10 miles (16 km) a day.
    • Philosophy: Famously, he avoids alcohol, smoking, and fried foods. His mantra, as he has often said, is to be stress-free. “Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from people who are negative, stay smiling, and keep running.”

His incredible story and infectious positivity catapulted him to global fame. He became a symbol of healthy aging and Sikh pride, instantly recognizable by his flowing white beard and bright yellow turban. In 2004, Adidas featured him in its “Impossible is Nothing” ad campaign alongside superstars David Beckham and Muhammad Ali. In 2012, he was given the honour of being a torchbearer for the London Olympic Games.

Fauja Singh officially retired from competitive racing in 2013 after the Hong Kong Marathon, though he continued running for charity and pleasure. Today, at a remarkable 114 years old, he stands as a powerful testament to the idea that it is never too late to find a new purpose, to overcome grief, and to achieve the seemingly impossible. He didn’t just run marathons; he ran his way into the hearts of millions, leaving a legacy of inspiration that will endure for generations.
