A High-Stakes Test on the World Stage for Canada’s New Government

KANANASKIS, ALBERTA – As the G7 summit in Alberta comes to a tumultuous close, the event has served as a major first test on the world stage for Canada’s new Prime Minister and his government.

According to diplomatic experts, the primary goal for Canada as the host was simply “relationship management” and avoiding a repeat of the disastrous 2018 G7 summit in Charlevoix, which ended in acrimony.

This year’s summit was held amidst a swirl of international crises, from the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran to the war in Ukraine and ongoing trade disputes. With so many volatile issues, analysts suggested that simply keeping all leaders at the table and engaged would count as a win for the Canadian hosts.

The Prime Minister walked a diplomatic high-wire, attempting to manage the unpredictable U.S. President while also navigating tricky diplomatic “resets” with other invited nations, such as India. The decision to forgo a traditional joint communiqué at the end of the summit was seen as a pragmatic move to prevent a public breakdown over disagreements.

However, the reality of a “shock-prone” world ultimately intervened, with the U.S. President leaving the summit a day early to deal with the Middle East crisis.

The event underscores the immense challenge for middle-power countries like Canada in trying to build consensus and manage global affairs when world leaders are increasingly distracted by domestic politics and international conflicts.
