Wind and Washouts Disrupt Northern B.C. Supply Routes

KWINITSA / SUNSHINE VALLEY — A combination of high-velocity winds on the North Coast and lingering infrastructure damage in the Southern Interior is challenging regional logistics this week, forcing the suspension of high-profile industrial loads and causing significant travel delays.

On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, DriveBC issued a wind warning for Highway 16 near Kwinitsa, approximately 70 km east of Prince Rupert. Sustained northeast winds of 60 km/h, with gusts reaching 80 km/h, have been recorded through the mainland inlets and valleys.

For the “Prince Rupert Gateway,” these conditions are more than a nuisance; they are a logistical bottleneck. Port regulations and safety protocols often mandate the temporary suspension of oversized and “high-profile” loads—such as the pipeline modules currently being moved to the interior—when gusts exceed the 60-70 km/h threshold.

The Southern Secondary – Highway 3 Crisis

While Highway 16 battles the wind, Highway 3, a vital secondary artery for goods moving toward the North Coast from the south, remains in a state of “emergency recovery.”

A major delay is currently in effect for a 46.2 km stretch between Sunshine Valley and Manning Park Resort. The disruption stems from a massive 50-metre washout that occurred during heavy rains in late 2025. Although a “temporary interim alignment” was opened to restore through-traffic, the site remains a bottleneck:

    • Speed Reductions: Traffic is restricted to 30 km/h through the work zone.
    • Single Lane Alternating: Significant delays are expected as crews work “round the clock” on permanent repairs.
    • Load Restrictions: Oversized loads are currently prohibited through this section, forcing heavy industrial equipment to detour via Highways 1 and 5.

    Power Grid Maintenance

The logistical strain extends to the regional power grid. BC Hydro successfully completed a brief planned outage in Mackenzie today (Jan 20) at noon to finalize maintenance on Yukon Place and Sekani Drive. Meanwhile, a longer five-hour outage in Quesnel is wrapping up this afternoon, affecting residents near Rawlings Road as crews replace aging poles to prevent winter storm failures.

As the “chilly” weather pattern forecast by Environment Canada takes hold through the end of January, transportation officials are urging commercial drivers to monitor the DriveBC portal hourly, particularly when transiting the wind-prone valleys between Terrace and Prince Rupert.
