PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. – A historic turning point in North American trade has been confirmed for the first time in nearly 30 years, Mexico has officially surpassed Canada as the largest market for U.S. exports.

New U.S. government data released this week highlights a seismic shift in economic dynamics between the North American partners, signaling Canada’s declining relative share amid ongoing political and tariff disputes.

Between January and August 2025, American exports to Mexico reached $226.4 billion, narrowly edging out the $225.6 billion worth of goods imported by Canada over the same period.

The Role of Geopolitics and Tariffs

For decades, Canada was the United States’ most important customer, supported by closely integrated supply chains and longstanding trade agreements like the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). However, recent actions have severely tested that stable relationship.

The shift comes amid rising tensions and trade restrictions. U.S. President Donald Trump recently imposed a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian imports in response to a political dispute over a television ad that used edited audio from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan to criticize tariffs. While President Trump has granted Mexico multiple exemptions and carve-outs following high-level negotiations, no such relief has been extended to Canada.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that while Mexico’s imports from the U.S. increased by 0.6% year-over-year, Canada’s expenditure on such products declined by 3.9%, clearing the way for Mexico to become the top buyer.

    Mexico’s Sectoral Dominance

The data confirms Mexico is rapidly becoming the United States’ primary North American trading partner for both imports and exports. Mexico is now the top buyer of U.S. goods in critical sectors, including:

    • Meat and Livestock Processing
    • Oil, Gas, and Energy Extraction
    • Iron and Steel Manufacturing
    • Electrical and Electronics Manufacturing

Two-way trade between Mexico and the U.S. reached $581.3 billion during the first eight months of 2025, significantly outpacing the two-way trade between the U.S. and Canada, which fell to $485.4 billion over the same period. This trend solidifies Mexico’s position as a crucial North American hub for trade and manufacturing.
