PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. – Environment Canada has issued concurrent Rainfall and Wind Warnings for the North Coast, advising residents of Prince Rupert and other coastal sections of B.C. to prepare for a significant storm system rolling in tonight and lasting through midday Thursday.
The double alert, issued Wednesday, October 22, indicates that a strong frontal system is expected to cross Haida Gwaii and move southeastward across the Central Coast.
Details of the Warnings
- Wind Warning: Winds are forecast to reach speeds of up to 110 kilometres per hour in exposed coastal sections. The strongest winds are expected to affect Haida Gwaii and the Central Coast/Northern Vancouver Island region early Thursday morning. Environment Canada warns that these high winds pose a risk of power outages, falling tree branches, and could toss around loose objects, causing injury or damage.
- Rainfall Warning: Up to 100 millimetres of rain is expected, with the highest accumulation targeting the coastal communities between Portland Inlet and Milbanke Sound. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Environment Canada is urging the public to “Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.”
Affected Areas and Public Safety
The warnings are specifically in effect for the North and Central Coast sections, Haida Gwaii, and the west coast of northern Vancouver Island.
The City of Prince Rupert has advised its residents to secure all outdoor property immediately. “If you have outdoor furniture, be sure to secure it as well as garbage and recycling bins or other outdoor items,” the city stated.
