PRINCE RUPERT — The Port of Prince Rupert remains a primary engine for the North Coast economy, maintaining a high operational tempo despite a reported four per cent decrease in foreign cargo volumes to start the 2026 fiscal year.

While the first month of the year saw just under 2.3 million tonnes of foreign cargo—a decrease of nearly 87,000 tonnes from the previous year—the port’s ability to handle a diverse array of commodities from metallurgical coal to biomass was on full display this past weekend.

Vessel Activity: A Gateway in Motion

The 48-hour period ending February 23 saw a constant rotation of massive cargo vessels. The arrival of the MSC Agamemnon VIII at 6:00 a.m. on February 23 highlighted the Fairview South terminal’s role in critical transpacific service routes. This 318-meter container ship, capable of carrying over 115,000 deadweight tonnes, is a linchpin for the “Chinook” and “CEN” logistics networks.

    Commodity Resilience and Infrastructure

The presence of the Corona Royal (thermal coal) and the Kaying (wood pellets) underscores the region’s enduring status as a major energy and biomass exporter. Notably, thermal coal saw a 129 per cent increase in tonnage this past month, counteracting significant drops in wood pellets and petroleum coke.

The Westview Wood Pellet Terminal, now owned by Drax Group, remains a state-of-the-art facility designed to receive wood pellets by rail from the B.C. interior for global distribution as renewable biofuel.

    Lobbying for Economic Diversification

Beyond traditional industrial cargo, the City of Prince Rupert is aggressively pursuing economic diversification through tourism. Earlier this month, Mayor Herb Pond and CAO Richard Pucci traveled to Juneau to meet with Alaska State Senator Bert Stedman.

The goal of the meeting was to advocate for the reinstatement of the Alaska Marine Highway ferry connection between Prince Rupert and Ketchikan. The ferry service, suspended since 2019, is viewed as a vital marine link that could unlock new cross-border trade and tourism opportunities for both regions.
