PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. – A celebratory night at the Prince Rupert Summer Carnival turned into a tragedy after a fatal incident resulted in the death of a carnival worker.
Shooting Star Amusements, the company operating the event, confirmed that an incident occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday evening involving their Zipper ride. Prince Rupert RCMP and Emergency Health Services (EHS) responded to a report of an unconscious man found near one of the rides. Despite efforts to save him, the man was pronounced deceased.
The identity of the deceased has not been officially released, but Shooting Star Amusements identified him as a coworker and described him as a “dear close friend” and a “great man.”
The investigation into the incident is now a multi-agency effort, with the Prince Rupert RCMP assisting WorkSafeBC and the B.C. Coroners Service. Technical Safety B.C., an independent organization that oversees the safety of amusement rides, is also involved.
In the wake of the tragedy, the carnival organizer has canceled the final two days of the event and is offering full refunds for advance online purchases.
The City of Prince Rupert released a statement expressing its condolences and offering support to the community. “Our hearts go out to their family, friends, and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read. The city announced that Victim Services counsellors and support staff would be available at the Civic Centre auditorium to provide help to anyone directly affected, including carnival employees.
The community has responded with an outpouring of support. On Wednesday afternoon, dozens of people, including Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond, gathered at the site of the incident for a healing circle. The group offered prayers and drumming to honor the deceased.
“Lots of tears, hugs and hopefully a little healing as drummers and singers helped us explore our grief,” Mayor Pond said, describing the powerful scene.
