Prince Rupert, BC – June 3, 2025 – The City of Prince Rupert has announced an expansion of closures along 2nd Avenue West in the vicinity of Rupert Square Mall, as concerns continue over a slumping sidewalk. The extended measures are being implemented for public safety and to prevent potential traffic conflicts while investigative work and monitoring are underway.

The issue, which began last week and led to a brief closure of the mall, has prompted the City to now close the entire length of the sidewalk where it meets the Rupert Square Mall.

Effective tomorrow morning, June 4, 2025, all pedestrian and vehicle parking access on the mall side of 2nd Avenue West will be closed off. Additionally, the adjoining crosswalk from 4th Street will also be closed to pedestrian traffic.

The City emphasizes that these measures are intended to avoid traffic conflicts with the neighbouring highway and ensure pedestrian safety. Detours will be in place, and the public is strongly encouraged to obey all posted signage.

Despite these closures, the bus stop located in front of Chevron on 2nd Avenue and 3rd Street remains operational and unaffected by these changes.

City officials have indicated that they are continuously monitoring the status of the sidewalk. Further information, including a map of the affected area, is available through official City of Prince Rupert channels.

The City stated, “We appreciate the community’s ongoing patience while investigative work and monitoring continues, and additional updates will be provided as they are available.”
