HAZELTON, B.C. – Ross Lake Park, a popular day-use area just south of Hazelton, is now more welcoming to all visitors following the completion of a $350,000 project to significantly upgrade its accessibility.

BC Parks recently announced the completion of the work, which was funded by a provincial investment aimed at removing barriers in parks across the province. The upgrades provide a barrier-free experience from the parking lot to the shoreline.

The centerpiece of the project is a new 15-metre-long, wheelchair-accessible aluminum dock, allowing visitors of all mobility levels to enjoy fishing or get closer to the water for a swim. A new dedicated lake-viewing platform has also been installed, offering a stunning and easily reachable vantage point.

To connect these features, crews constructed 200 metres of wide, hard-packed gravel pathways. The project also included the installation of new accessible picnic tables, benches, and a modern, fully accessible pit toilet.

In an official statement, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy said the project is a key part of BC Parks’ “Commitment to Inclusion,” ensuring people of all ages and abilities can enjoy the health and wellness benefits of nature.

Skeena MLA Claire Rattee praised the investment, highlighting the importance of Ross Lake as a community hub for families, seniors, and all residents in the Hazelton area. The upgrades ensure that the beloved park can now be more easily enjoyed by everyone.
