SKEENA NEWS REPORT — As of late morning Sunday, December 28, 2025, the transportation network across the Skeena region is under severe operational strain. A volatile thermodynamic transition — an aggressive Pacific frontal system overriding a entrenched Arctic airmass — is rapidly transforming road surfaces, converting compacted snow into widespread black ice.

Freezing Rain Crisis: Terrace & Kitimat

Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm Warning for North Coast inland sections. Heavy snowfall is expected to transition into prolonged freezing rain late Sunday, continuing into Monday morning.

    • Icing Risk: Snow accumulations of 20–30 cm will be overtaken by ice glaze, rendering even winter tires marginally effective.
    • Arctic Outflow: Gusts up to 60 km/h are generating blowing snow and wind chills approaching −20°C, significantly reducing the effectiveness of standard de-icing agents.

Northern Supply Chain Severed: Highway 37N

The closure of Highway 37N at the Blue River Bridge, approximately 19 km south of the Yukon border, has effectively halted northbound logistics. Commercial traffic bound for Watson Lake and Whitehorse remains stationary. No detour exists. The site is under active assessment following a major vehicle incident.

    Avalanche & Hydrological Threats Escalating

    • Stewart Corridor (Highway 37A): Up to 60 cm of new snowfall in Bear Pass, followed by rain, is likely to trigger natural avalanche cycles. A proactive closure within 24 hours is probable.
    • Coastal Highway 16: Rainfall totals approaching 180 mm pose elevated risks of washouts, slope failures, and river-adjacent infrastructure instability along the Skeena corridor.

    Safety & Compliance Reminders

    • Winter Tires: Mandatory on all northern highways (minimum 3.5 mm tread).
    • Commercial Chaining: Mandatory at Rainbow Summit and other high-elevation passes. Fines now reach $598 CAD.
    • Emergency Preparedness: Travelers should carry blankets, food, water, and extra fuel. Emergency response times may be extended due to access constraints.

    Skeena News Editorial Note

All non-essential travel toward the Yukon border or through Coast Mountain passes should be deferred until freezing rain subsides and structural assessments are complete.
