SKEENA REGION, B.C. – The wildfire danger rating has been elevated to “High” for large parts of the Skeena region, as sustained warm and dry conditions increase the risk of new fire starts.
The BC Wildfire Service updated the rating on Wednesday for areas including the Bulkley and Nadina fire zones, which cover the Hazeltons, Smithers, and the Lakes District. The coastal areas remain at a lower risk for now.
A “High” danger rating means that forest fuels are very dry and the risk of fire is serious. New fires may start easily, burn vigorously, and challenge suppression efforts.
Officials are urging extreme caution for anyone heading into the backcountry. All human-caused wildfires are preventable. Residents are reminded to ensure any campfires are kept small, never left unattended, and are fully extinguished and cool to the touch before leaving the area.
Open burning prohibitions, including the use of fireworks and sky lanterns, remain in effect for most of the region.
With no significant rain in the immediate forecast, the public is being asked to be extra vigilant and to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cellphone.
