HAZELTON, B.C. – The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is actively responding to a new, out-of-control wildfire burning near Hazelton Creek, just west of South Hazelton.
As of Thursday afternoon, the fire is estimated to be approximately four hectares in size. Due to its “Out of Control” status, the fire is expected to continue growing. Airtankers have been deployed to the scene, establishing retardant lines to help “box in” the fire and slow its spread, while multiple ground crews work to establish control lines.
According to the BCWS, the fire is burning through slash and debris, which is producing a significant amount of smoke. This smoke is highly visible to residents in the Hazeltons and to travelers along Highway 16. The primary focus of firefighting efforts is to prevent the blaze from spreading into the surrounding timber stands.
At this time, officials have confirmed that no structures or communities are under immediate threat, and no evacuation alerts or orders are in effect.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation but is suspected to be human-caused.
This is a dynamic and evolving situation. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels for the most up-to-date information.
