Skeena’s Economy Braces for Impact After Trump’s “Reckless” Tariffs

SKEENA REGION, B.C. – A wave of anger and anxiety is sweeping the Skeena region after U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally launched a new trade assault against Canada, with our local industries caught directly in the crossfire.

In a move widely condemned as politically motivated, President Trump signed an executive order Friday imposing a crippling 35% tariff on key Canadian goods, including the lumber and aluminum that form the very backbone of the Northwest’s economy.

The administration’s official justification—that the tariffs are a response to fentanyl smuggling—is being dismissed by Canadian officials and local leaders as a baseless pretext for punishing a key ally.

“To link this aggressive tariff to the fentanyl crisis is not only absurd, it’s insulting,” said a source within Canada’s Global Affairs department. “This is a reckless political maneuver, using a national tragedy as a cover for pure protectionism. Our communities in the Skeena are now paying the price for it.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a forceful condemnation, calling the move unacceptable and vowing to fight back.“This White House has chosen to target its closest ally with damaging, unilateral tariffs based on a flimsy and false justification,” Carney’s office stated. “We will not let our industries be bullied.”

Here at home, the theoretical has become painfully real. The 35% tariff threatens the viability of forestry operations from the Nass Valley to Terrace. In Kitimat, the smelter that has supported thousands of families is now under immediate threat, not from market forces, but from a political decision made thousands of kilometres away.

“Let’s be clear: this is a manufactured crisis,” stated the Kitimat mayor’s office. “This isn’t about trade fairness; it’s about an ‘America First’ policy that disregards its friends and devastates communities like ours. We expect our Prime Minister to stand firm against this aggressive posturing from the Trump administration.”

This policy is a hallmark of President Trump’s approach to trade, which has frequently seen him use national security arguments to impose tariffs that play to his domestic base, regardless of the economic fallout for neighbours.

For now, families across the Northwest are caught in the economic crossfire of a trade war they did not ask for, their futures held hostage by a political agenda that seems to have little regard for the consequences.
