A Look at What the Day Means and Why We Celebrate

SKEENA REGION, B.C. – Across the Skeena region and the entire country today, Canadians are celebrating with fireworks, barbecues, and community gatherings. But beyond the red and white, what is the history behind Canada Day?

    The Birth of a Nation

Canada Day, celebrated every July 1st, is essentially Canada’s birthday. It marks the anniversary of the day in 1867 when the Constitution Act, 1867 (originally known as the British North America Act) came into effect.

This historic act united three separate British colonies—the Province of Canada (which is now Ontario and Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick—into a single, self-governing entity within the British Empire called the Dominion of Canada.

For many years, the holiday was actually known as “Dominion Day.” It wasn’t until 1982, the same year the Constitution was fully patriated from Britain, that the name was officially changed to “Canada Day.”

    How We Celebrate

Today, Canada Day is a national statutory holiday celebrated with pride and enthusiasm. It’s a day for parades, pancake breakfasts, concerts, and community festivals, like the ones happening today in Terrace, Kitimat, Smithers, and Prince Rupert. It’s a chance for families and friends to gather, enjoy the summer weather, and celebrate the shared values of living in Canada. The day is almost always capped off with spectacular fireworks displays across the country.

    A Day for Reflection

In recent years, the meaning of Canada Day has also evolved. For many Canadians, including Indigenous Peoples, July 1st is also a day for quiet reflection. It’s a time to acknowledge the complex and difficult parts of Canada’s history, particularly its relationship with Indigenous communities, and to think about the work that still needs to be done.

It has become a day not only to celebrate the country we are, but to recommit to the ongoing process of reconciliation and to building a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone who calls this land home.

So, whether you are celebrating with a bang or reflecting quietly, Happy Canada Day from Skeena News.
