FRASER LAKE — The Village of Fraser Lake has transitioned to hazardous site monitoring after a catastrophic fire leveled much of its commercial core over the weekend. The blaze, which erupted around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2026, resulted in the total destruction of several local landmarks, leaving a community of fewer than 1,000 residents reeling from the loss of essential services.+1
The Toll on Local Business
The fire originated at a shopping plaza and quickly consumed multiple structures. By Monday and Tuesday, February 23–24, the full scale of the commercial crisis became clear.

Mayor Sarrah Storey noted that approximately one dozen people are out of work due to the blaze. While the Fraser Lake Supermarket was fortunately spared and reopened on February 23, the loss of the Everyday Grocery Store represents a critical hit to the local supply chain.
Regional Response and Site Monitoring
The emergency response highlighted the strength of Northern B.C.’s mutual aid network. The Fraser Lake Volunteer Fire Department was supported by crews from Fort Fraser, Burns Lake, Fort St. James, and Vanderhoof.
Firefighters remained on-site from the pre-dawn hours of Sunday through Tuesday to manage flare-ups. The Village of Fraser Lake has issued a warning that the area remains hazardous due to dangerous smoke and structural instability.Residents are instructed to avoid the site to allow investigators to safely determine the cause of the fire.
Economic Setback and Fundraising Efforts
This tragedy comes at a difficult time for Fraser Lake, which is still recovering from the closures of its sawmill and mine in recent years. To support the volunteer first responders, Mayor Storey has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help replace damaged firefighting equipment.+1
The loss of the Fraser Lake Inn is felt particularly acutely as a social loss; the building served as a community gathering place for decades. “The historical feeling of loss is upsetting people,” Mayor Storey said, noting that the hotel was a central hub for post-hockey game celebrations and traveler lodging.
