G7 Summit Opens in Alberta Amidst Global Crises and Trade Tensions

KANANASKIS, ALBERTA – Leaders from the world’s seven largest advanced economies are gathering in the Canadian Rockies today for the G7 summit, but the meeting is being overshadowed by an escalating conflict between Israel and Iran and ongoing trade disputes with the United States.

The summit, hosted by Canada’s Prime Minister, brings together the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. However, reports indicate that in a break from tradition, there will be no comprehensive joint statement issued at the end of the summit. The move is seen as an attempt to avoid the public disagreements over trade and foreign policy that have marked previous meetings.

The agenda is expected to be dominated by the overnight attacks between Israel and Iran, with one G7 official stating the leaders plan to issue a joint statement calling for de-escalation.

Many of the formal discussions will take a back seat to a series of one-on-one bilateral meetings, as leaders from the G7 and invited guest countries—including India, Ukraine, and Australia—seek to speak directly with the U.S. President about his administration’s “America First” trade policies and tariffs that have impacted their economies.
