SKIDEGATE / SMITHERS — The Skeena and Haida Gwaii regions faced a dual environmental reminder of the North’s volatile nature this week, as a mid-sized earthquake rattled the coast and stagnant winter air triggered health warnings in the Bulkley Valley.

Haida Gwaii Shaken by 4.4 Magnitude Quake

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at approximately 3:57 p.m., a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck off the southern tip of the Haida Gwaii archipelago. According to Earthquakes Canada, the epicenter was located roughly 184 kilometers south-southeast of Skidegate at a depth of 20 kilometers.

While the tremor was significant enough to be recorded across the Pacific Northwest, emergency officials confirmed there were no reports of damage and no tsunami threat to coastal communities. Scientists noted the quake occurred near the Queen Charlotte plate boundary—a high-activity zone capable of “megathrust” events.

This latest tremor follows a busy year for seismic monitoring; data from the federal government shows that over 5,000 earthquakes were recorded across Canada in 2025, with approximately 75% occurring on or near the tectonic boundaries of Western Canada.

Smithers Air Quality Advisory Ends Following Dust Peak

In the interior, residents of Smithers spent much of the week under a Special Air Quality Statement due to elevated concentrations of “coarse particulate matter” (PM10).

The advisory, issued by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with Northern Health, was triggered not by smoke, but by road dust. High volumes of winter traction material (sand and salt) accumulated on dry road surfaces were stirred up by traffic, causing particulate levels to exceed provincial safety objectives.

“Exposure is a particular concern for infants, the elderly, and those with underlying respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD,” the advisory warned.

The Update: As of 12:00 p.m. today, Thursday, January 22, the advisory for Smithers has officially ended. Changing meteorological conditions and a slight increase in moisture have helped settle the dust, bringing 24-hour average concentrations down to 37.4 μg/m³, well below the 50 μg/m³ threshold.

Regional Air Quality Snapshot (Jan 22, 12:00 PM):

    • Smithers: 37.4 μg/m³ (Warning Ended)
    • Houston: 18.1 μg/m³ (Good)
    • Burns Lake: 16.2 μg/m³ (Good)
