SMITHERS — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) intensified its efforts on February 2, 2026, seeking public assistance in the investigation into the death of a First Nations female youth. The youth was found deceased on a walking trail near Riverside Park on December 27, 2025, less than 24 hours after she was reported missing.

As the province’s civilian-led police oversight agency, the IIO’s mandate is to determine if there is any connection between police action or inaction and the death, regardless of whether there is an initial allegation of wrongdoing.

    A Critical Discrepancy in Attire

A key development released on February 2 involves a significant discrepancy in the clothing worn by the youth. When she was last seen being dropped off near 9th Avenue and Main Street at 7:00 p.m. on December 26, she was wearing a white puffy jacket and blue jeans.

However, when her body was discovered at 10:00 a.m. the following morning, she was wearing grey pajama pants, a black shirt, a black sweater, and western-style ankle boots. This unexplained change in attire suggests a set of circumstances the IIO is keen to clarify through witness statements and video surveillance.

    Community Concern and RCMP Response

The Smithers RCMP issued a statement on January 31, 2026, acknowledging the “heartbreaking” nature of the situation and clarifying that they are conducting a separate investigation into the circumstances leading up to the death. While the RCMP has stated there is “no increased risk to public safety,” the cause of death has not been disclosed, maintaining high levels of community anxiety.

The investigation has been bolstered by an increased presence of emergency services and additional RCMP officers in Smithers to support the local detachment during this period.

    Broader Regional Implications

The investigation is further complicated by the history of the “Highway of Tears” and persistent concerns regarding the safety of Indigenous women and girls in Northern B.C.. Smithers serves as a central hub for the Bulkley Valley, and the community remains deeply sensitive to these issues. The outcome of the IIO’s investigation is expected to have significant implications for local police-community relations.
