The Skeena region faced its most severe operational disruption of the year during the early hours of Monday, May 4, 2026. A massive telecommunications outage, beginning at approximately 3:15 AM, paralyzed digital and voice connectivity across a vast area stretching from Haida Gwaii and Prince Rupert to Burns Lake and Smithers. This 15-hour blackout was not caused by a technical glitch or a storm, but by a deliberate act of vandalism linked to attempted copper cable theft.

    A Severed Lifeline

Technicians confirmed that perpetrators operating between Fraser Lake and Burns Lake cut through primary fiber optic lines shared by regional providers CityWest and Telus. The damage was so extensive that it required specialized equipment and multiple repair crews to restore service. This incident highlights a dangerous trend in the Pacific Northwest, where the high value of industrial metals makes critical utility corridors a target for high-risk theft.

The blackout effectively halted the digital economy in 16 communities, including Kitimat, Terrace, Hazelton, Iskut, and Dease Lake. Without internet or phone services, businesses were paralyzed, electronic payment systems failed, and municipal services were forced into manual overrides. Service was finally restored by 6:00 PM on May 4, at which point providers advised residents to power cycle their modems and phones to reconnect.

Healthcare and Public Safety at Risk

The failure of primary communication nodes posed an immediate threat to regional health and safety. Northern Health confirmed that 21 different healthcare facilities were impacted by the outage. While larger hospitals in Prince Rupert and Terrace maintained some connectivity via Starlink satellite redundancy, smaller rural sites were left isolated from regional trauma centers.

The Lakes District Hospital in Burns Lake was among the hardest hit, losing all incoming phone capabilities. Consequently, clinical communications had to be temporarily diverted to Prince George, illustrating the fragility of rural emergency response. Meanwhile, E-Comm 911 activated emergency roaming protocols to help mobile users reach emergency services, though connection stability varied throughout the day.
