    Individual Airlifted to Vancouver After Tragic Fire at Smithers Temporary Shelter

    SMITHERS, B.C. – One person has sustained significant burn injuries and was airlifted to Vancouver for specialized medical treatment following a fire at Smithers’ temporary overnight sheltering location in the early hours of Saturday, July 19.

    According to a news release issued by the Town of Smithers, the fire broke out early this morning. Smithers Fire Rescue and other first responders were dispatched to the location, where they arrived quickly and were able to promptly contain the blaze, preventing further harm.

    The Town of Smithers expressed its gratitude for the swift and compassionate action of the volunteer firefighters and first responders.

    In the statement, the Town said the tragic incident highlights a critical issue facing the community.

    “This incident underscores the urgent need for safe, sustainable housing solutions and wraparound support services for vulnerable individuals,” the press release stated.

    The Town also affirmed its dedication to addressing the problem, stating it is “committed to working with provincial and federal partners to pursue lasting solutions that prioritize the health, safety, and dignity of all members of the community.”

    No further details on the condition of the injured individual or the cause of the fire have been released at this time.
