TERRACE — The transportation network of the Skeena region, which is vital for the movement of people and industrial supplies, faced several operational challenges and updates on February 1 and 2, 2026. Highway 16, the “Yellowhead Highway,” remained open but was subject to numerous minor incidents and maintenance projects that impacted travel times.

Highway 16: The Constant Battle Against Terrain

The region’s primary artery faced a series of localized disruptions over the two-day period:

    • Skidegate Washout: Near Skidegate, a washout caused by heavy rains required single-lane alternating traffic and a strict 30 km/h speed limit. Motorists were advised to watch for traffic control as crews worked to repair the gravel surface.
    • Haida Gwaii Bridge Maintenance: Bridge repairs at the Woodpile Bridge (east of Port Clements) and bridge construction between Nadu Road and Adams Road resulted in additional single-lane sections.
    • Mainland Construction: Ongoing construction work between Hargreaves Road and Moose Lake resulted in westbound lane closures and alternating traffic, slated to continue through late March.

    Aviation Status: Reliability at YXT

At the Northwest Regional Airport (YXT), flight operations on February 1 and 2 were largely on time, providing essential links between the Northwest, Vancouver, and Calgary.

Northwest Regional Airport (YXT) Flight Status Summary

While morning flights were reliable, historical data for late-day routes like WS3446 reveals significant variability. Over the past 30 trips, the on-time arrival rate for WS3446 has been only 33%, with flights arriving an average of 50 minutes late.

    Reinforcing Transportation Hubs

The airport remains a focal point for regional development. Smithers council recently approved the $50,000 purchase of a new groundside plow and spreader truck for its own airport facilities.

This investment replaces a 1998 Freightliner that had exceeded its useful life due to significant internal corrosion. The move acknowledges that ground-side logistics—ensuring safe access to terminals and parking—are just as critical as air-side operations for ensuring winter reliability in the North.
