TERRACE, B.C. – Terrace officials have successfully used city bylaws to shut down a notorious house on Munroe Street, in a multi-agency effort that Mayor Sean Bujtas is calling a “major victory for public safety.” The Terrace RCMP proved that they are never too busy for public safety, as they were also involved in a more unusual incident in Prince George where a man driving a toy car was arrested for impaired driving.
On September 9, after years of public safety concerns and unaddressed fire hazards, the Terrace RCMP, Fire Department, and City officials worked together to clear residents from a house on the 3200 block of Munroe Street. The property, which police have previously linked to drug trafficking, was evacuated, utilities were disconnected, and the building was boarded up.
Mayor Bujtas praised the collaboration but noted that the process took “significant time due to higher levels of government bureaucracy.” He stated that City Council will be meeting with the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General at the upcoming Union of B.C. Municipalities to discuss this issue.
Meanwhile, on Friday, September 5, Prince George RCMP demonstrated their dedication to public safety with an unusual traffic stop. While the detachment was busy with a fire and a crash involving an ambulance, an officer spotted a man driving a toy car down Fifteenth Avenue during the morning commute.
According to RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, the officer conducted a traffic stop and found the driver had a suspended license and was impaired. The man was arrested for prohibited driving and provided two breath samples that were over the legal limit. He was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and has a court appearance set for December.
The RCMP release explained that “while it might seem to some to be an inefficient use of police time to pull over a driver in a toy car, the risk the driver was creating to other motorists on the road… was enough to warrant police attention.”
