TERRACE, B.C. – A nine-day search for a missing man in the remote Cariboo region of British Columbia has concluded with a triumphant and miraculous outcome. Andrew Barber, 39, was found alive on Friday, August 8, in what first responders are calling a true testament to his will to survive against impossible odds.

The extensive search, which involved countless hours on the ground and in the air by the Williams Lake RCMP and Quesnel Search & Rescue (Quesnel SAR), ended when a police helicopter flying from Prince George spotted a crucial clue: Barber’s truck in a remote area north of McLeese Lake.

Not far from his vehicle, rescuers made a stunning discovery. Barber had used rocks and mud to spell out the word “Help,” a final act of desperation that ultimately saved his life. “After over a week in the wilderness, our subject has been located alive during today’s search from the air,” Quesnel Search & Rescue announced in a statement, calling the outcome a result of every resource and piece of technology available.

    Survival Against the Odds

Barber, who was found in poor health, relied on his survival instincts to endure more than a week in the wilderness. According to Staff Sgt. Brad McKinnon of the Williams Lake RCMP, Barber was “literally slurping unclean pond water to stay hydrated.” McKinnon emphasized that while the human body can go a long time without food, water is a critical and immediate necessity.

In addition to finding a source of water, Barber constructed a makeshift shelter out of mud and sticks and used grass to stuff his clothing, protecting himself from the elements. Quesnel SAR president Bob Zimmerman noted that Barber was having a hard time standing when he was found. “I don’t know that he would have made it another 24 hours without us recovering him,” Zimmerman told CBC, underscoring the critical timing of the rescue.

McKinnon echoed this sentiment, telling the Vancouver Island Free Daily, “If we had not located him today, I don’t know if we would have had the outcome that we have today.”

    Miraculous Rescue and Recovery

Following his rescue, Barber was immediately taken to Cariboo Memorial Hospital in Williams Lake. He was treated for severe dehydration and sustained injuries.

In a follow-up with the Vancouver Sun, Staff Sgt. McKinnon provided a positive update, confirming that Barber is “doing quite well” and has since been released from the hospital. The reason for his presence in the remote, “boggy” area remains unclear.

The story serves as a powerful reminder of the dedication of Search and Rescue teams and the incredible resilience of the human spirit. As McKinnon stated, the search was “essentially like looking for a needle in a haystack,” making Barber’s recovery a miraculous end to a harrowing ordeal.
