TERRACE, B.C. – Coast Mountain College (CMTN) is set to enhance its support for adult learners across the Northwest, thanks to over $100,000 in new one-time funding from the provincial government.
The funding, announced by the college on Thursday, will be used to create a new 16-month “adult upgrading educational advisor” position. This role is designed to provide a dedicated, single point of contact for adults who need to upgrade their English, math, or science skills to pursue post-secondary education or complete their high school diploma.
The new advisor will offer personalized outreach and guidance, helping prospective students with everything from applications and course planning to academic support and career advice.
According to the college’s Dean of Business, Access Education, and IT Programs, the position was created to address a critical gap. “Currently, many students who apply to Adult Upgrading do not follow through to register in classes,” the dean stated, explaining that this new role will help guide students through the process and make adult learning more accessible.
The new role will be filled by a CMTN alumnus who previously worked as a student engagement officer at the Terrace Campus. The new advisor said her past experience gives her valuable insight into student needs and that she is excited to provide the one-on-one support that can make a major difference in a student’s journey.
The college emphasizes that having a specific, approachable person for students to contact is the most important aspect of the new initiative. This new role is aimed at better meeting the needs of adult learners and fostering greater access to post-secondary education across the region.
Anyone with questions about the Adult Upgrading program at CMTN can now reach out to the new advisor for support.
