KITIMAT, B.C. – The first-ever vessel to collect a cargo of Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG) is on its final approach to Kitimat tonight, marking the start of a new era in Canada’s energy history.
The Shell-chartered LNG carrier, the 173,400-cubic-metre Gaslog Glasgow, is currently navigating the final leg of its journey through the Douglas Channel under the guidance of the BC Coast Pilots. After holding offshore since June 22, the massive tanker began its transit towards the LNG Canada terminal today.
Live marine tracking data shows the vessel is expected to dock at the facility late Friday evening or early Saturday morning.
The arrival of the Gaslog Glasgow is the last major step before the first export shipment. The LNG Canada plant, which produced its first drop of LNG on June 22, is now ready to begin the loading process.
This historic first cargo will be loaded for Shell, the majority stakeholder in the project. According to reports, two other carriers are scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks for project partners Petronas and Mitsubishi, signaling the beginning of sustained operations.
The arrival of the tanker this weekend aligns perfectly with expectations that the first shipment could depart on or around Canada Day, July 1, a truly symbolic moment for the nation. All eyes in the Northwest are now on the Kitimat terminal as this historic event unfolds.
