KITIMAT — The Kitimat RCMP’s weekly report for the period of January 8 to January 14, 2026, details a series of high-stakes investigations, ranging from a middle-of-the-night roll-over to a spree of downtown break-and-enters that led to a residential search warrant.
Prohibited Driver Caught After Roll-Over
On the night of January 8, at approximately 10:25 p.m., officers were dispatched to a single-vehicle collision near the intersection of Bunting Street and Lahakas Boulevard North. Upon arrival, police found a vehicle rolled onto its side, but the driver was nowhere to be found.
Following a description provided by witnesses, officers located the driver nearby. While alcohol was not a factor and the driver was uninjured, the investigation revealed they were a prohibited driver. The individual was arrested and issued violation tickets for having no insurance and failing to remain at the scene of an accident. They have been released with a future court date.
Downtown Spree Leads to Arrest
The morning of January 10 was a busy one for local business owners in Mountainview Square. At 6:30 a.m., an alarm alerted police to a break-and-enter on the 500 block, where a glass door had been smashed. Shortly after, a second business around the corner reported similar damage. By the end of the day, two vehicles in the area were also found with smashed windows and items stolen.
Kitimat RCMP identified a suspect and executed a search warrant at a local residence on the morning of January 12. The suspect was arrested and released to attend court later this year.
Wrong Bus, Wrong Town
In one of the more unusual files of the week, police were called to Kitamaat Village on January 14 after a man was kicked off a transit bus from Terrace for being intoxicated.
The man was later spotted walking dangerously along Highway 37 near the Hirsch Creek Bridge. When located by officers, the man explained that he had boarded a bus in Terrace expecting to stay in town, but fell asleep and woke up in Kitimat. In his intoxicated state, he believed he could simply walk back to Terrace—a distance of roughly 60 kilometers. To ensure his safety, he was arrested for causing a disturbance and spent the night in the “drunk tank” before being released without charges once sober.
Minor Collisions and Proactive Patrols
- January 12: A two-vehicle collision occurred at Kingfisher Avenue and Osprey Street at 6:02 p.m. No injuries were reported, and the vehicles sustained only minor “fender bender” damage after one driver drifted over the center line.
- Proactive Patrols: An officer on foot patrol in the downtown core discovered an insecure business door. After a thorough check of the interior, the owner was contacted to secure the premises. Nothing was reported missing.
