KITIMAT, B.C. – Residents of Kitimat should prepare for a series of road and parking lot closures this weekend and into next week as the community celebrates with a packed schedule of events leading up to Canada Day.
Here is a day-by-day guide to help you navigate the festivities:
Saturday, June 28: Memorial Hill Climb
The annual Memorial Hill Climb race will take place on Saturday. For the duration of the event, the following closures will be in effect:
- Road Closure: Haisla Boulevard will be fully closed to traffic between Kingfisher Boulevard and Tsimshian Boulevard.
- Detour: All traffic will be rerouted via Kuldo Boulevard.
- Parking Closure: The parking lot at Mountainview Square, located next to the veterinary clinic, will be closed to the public for event staging. (Note: Sunday, June 29 is the scheduled rain-out date for this event).
Monday, June 30: Pre-Canada Day Concert & Fireworks
A major celebration is planned at the Riverlodge Recreation Centre on Monday evening, featuring an outdoor concert and a fireworks display to ring in Canada Day.
- Parking Closure: The main parking lot at the Riverlodge Recreation Centre will be closed to all public vehicles for the entire day to accommodate the event setup. Limited accessible parking will be available.
- Road Closures: Expect closures and managed access on Peace Street and sections of Kuldo Boulevard surrounding the recreation centre throughout the evening. Traffic control personnel will be on-site to direct vehicles.
Tuesday, July 1: Canada Day Parade & Festivities
Celebrations continue on Canada Day with the traditional parade through the community.
- Parade Route Closure: The parade route will be closed to all traffic from approximately 11:50 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Road Closures: Peace Street will remain closed for part of the day for other community activities.
- Free Transit: To make getting around easier, Kitimat Public Transit will be free of charge for all riders from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Canada Day.
- Parking: The Riverlodge Recreation Centre parking lot will reopen to the public on Canada Day.
Residents are encouraged to use the free transit, plan ahead, and allow extra time to get to their destinations during the celebrations.
