KITIMAT, B.C. – June 4, 2025 – Kitimat residents will be pleased to learn that restoration work on the Kitimat Ice Rink (KIR) is set to begin this week, marking a significant step towards its reopening. Repair crews are expected on-site in the coming days to commence the extensive project.
Officials have announced that the restoration and improvements are estimated to be completed by Fall 2026, with the community eagerly anticipating welcoming skaters back to the ice for the 2026 fall season.
The comprehensive repair plan for the KIR includes:
- New electrical systems
- New flooring
- New boards, including glass and netting
- A new score clock
- Updates and repairs to the roofing system
The need for these extensive repairs follows a fire at the facility on March 17, 2024. In today’s announcement, it was noted that the process to accurately scope the extent of the damage and work thoroughly with the insurance provider was an involved one.
“We are excited that the project has reached this point where repairs can begin,” stated the announcement, looking forward to the rink’s eventual return to operation.
The Kitimat Ice Rink is a cornerstone of the community, and its restoration will be welcome news for local hockey teams, figure skaters, and recreational users.
