KITIMAT, B.C. – The Kitimat RCMP had a busy week responding to a range of calls, from rescuing stranded paddle boarders near Minette Bay to taking an impaired driver off the road during a check stop.

According to the detachment’s weekly report covering July 17 to July 23, officers were active with traffic enforcement. During a check stop on Kuldo Boulevard on the night of July 22, a driver provided a breath sample that resulted in a ‘FAIL’ reading on an approved screening device. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition, and their vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

In a separate incident on Highway 37, an officer clocked a vehicle travelling at 148 km/h in a 100 km/h zone while passing three other vehicles. The driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

On the evening of July 18, police were called to assist two paddle boarders near Minette Bay. The pair had been caught by a sudden increase in wind, which blew them into a log. Officers were able to locate the duo and assist them safely back to shore. Police noted that the brightly colored clothing worn by the paddle boarders was a key factor in being able to spot them quickly.

Other calls during the week included a two-vehicle rear-end collision at the intersection of Haisla and Lahakas Boulevards on July 23, which resulted in a violation ticket for driving without due care but no injuries. Officers also investigated a single vehicle that had slid into a ditch on Dyke Road, also with no injuries reported.

Police also responded to a routine noise complaint from a party in the Cable Car neighbourhood, which was resolved after a conversation with the property representative.

The Kitimat RCMP remind the public that anyone with information on crimes in the area can report it anonymously through Northern BC Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
