TERRACE, B.C. – The new parking lot at Ksyen Regional Hospital has officially opened, bringing a significant increase in free parking spaces and providing a welcome solution to a long-standing parking shortage that has challenged patients, staff, and nearby businesses.
Northern Health announced that the completed lot, which provides 313 new parking spaces, was opened on Monday, September 22. The new lot marks the end of months of tight parking, which began after the new hospital opened in 2024. During the construction period, hospital users were often forced to park on both sides of Tetrault Street and on nearby access roads, creating congestion and frustration. The new lot’s opening means the temporary gravel parking areas used during construction are now closed.
The lack of parking during the hospital’s transition was an ongoing issue for the community. According to news reports, Terrace City Council had to temporarily relax parking restrictions around the hospital to ease congestion and safety risks. Nearby businesses also faced problems with their premises being used for overflow parking.
Eryn Collins, a spokesperson for Northern Health, previously stated that the new facility would have 313 permanent spaces, a significant increase from the approximate 150 spaces available during the Mills Memorial Hospital era. She noted that this number was the maximum capacity for the site and was expected to cover both employee and visitor needs for the “foreseeable future.”
In a public statement, Northern Health thanked the community for its patience, calling the project a “key infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving access for those arriving by vehicle.”
