Kitimat, BC – June 3, 2025 – LNG Canada has issued a community notification regarding intermittent alarm testing at its tugboat berth, which commenced today, June 3rd, and will conclude on June 4th. The testing will occur between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on both days.
Residents in Kitimat and Kitamaat Village may hear two-tone alarm sounds during this period. This activity is part of LNG Canada’s ongoing safe start-up program for its facility.
As part of its safe start-up communications, LNG Canada also provided information regarding flaring at its facility:
- Normal and Safe: Flaring is a normal and provincially regulated safety system critical for facility start-ups, shutdowns, and when equipment maintenance is required. It provides a safe way to combust natural gas. LNG Canada anticipates flaring at its facility to have begun in 2024, occurring much less frequently during steady operations.
- Visible During Start-Up: When the facility undertakes its initial start-up, an elevated flare flame will be visible, and there may be instances of associated visible smoke. This is an expected part of safely starting the LNG export facility.
- Reduced Frequency Over Time: As the facility’s equipment settles into its regular operating range, the frequency of flaring and any associated visible smoke will significantly decrease.
