KITIMAT, B.C. – In what could be a landmark moment for the nation, the first-ever export shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Canada might depart from the LNG Canada terminal in Kitimat as early as Canada Day, July 1.
The final, visible piece of this historic puzzle is now en route. The LNG carrier vessel Gaslog Glasgow has been identified as the ship that will carry the first cargo. According to marine tracking data, the 290-metre tanker is expected to arrive at the Kitimat terminal this Sunday, June 29, to prepare for loading.
The imminent arrival of the ship comes just days after the Shell-led facility successfully produced its first drop of LNG, confirming the massive plant is operational. The milestone is the culmination of over a decade of planning and construction on the largest private investment project in Canadian history.
This first shipment, a portion of which is owned by project partner Petronas, is reportedly destined for Toho Gas in Japan. The opening of the Kitimat terminal creates a new, direct, and significantly shorter shipping route for Canadian natural gas to reach markets in Asia.
While LNG Canada has not made a formal announcement on the specific date, the arrival of the tanker this weekend aligns perfectly with the possibility of a Canada Day departure—a potentially symbolic launch for a new era in the nation’s energy sector.
