Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, next week, a move seen as a cautious step toward mending a deep diplomatic rift with Canada. The visit is being watched closely across the country, including by members of the Sikh communities here in the Skeena region.

Prime Minister Modi accepted the invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to the summit, which runs from June 15-17. The meeting comes after years of strained relations following Canadian allegations implicating the Indian government in the 2023 murder of a Sikh separatist leader on Canadian soil. Tensions were further strained by accusations of Indian interference in Canada’s 2019 and 2021 elections.

India has consistently and firmly denied all allegations.

For the established Sikh communities in the Northwest, such as those centered around the Skeena Valley Guru Nanak Brotherhood in Terrace and the Kitimat Sikh Society, the high-stakes diplomacy is more than just a news story. With many local families having deep ties to both Canada and India, the outcome of these top-level discussions carries significant personal weight.

While the G7 agenda will focus on global economic and security issues, the meeting between the two leaders on the summit’s sidelines will be scrutinized for any signs of a thaw in relations. It remains a complex issue for many Indo-Canadians, balancing pride in their heritage with the serious allegations raised by their own government.

The discussions in Kananaskis will be a critical indicator of the future of the Canada-India relationship, with the results resonating from Parliament Hill right back to communities here in the Skeena.
