TERRACE, BC — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a nationwide food recall warning for four specific varieties of Pillsbury brand Pizza Pops due to possible E. coli O26 contamination.

As of December 22, 2025, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) reports that 20 laboratory-confirmed cases of illness have been linked to the outbreak. The cases occurred between early October and late November 2025, resulting in four hospitalizations and no reported deaths.

    Outbreak Demographics and Regional Impact

The outbreak has affected a wide demographic, with patients ranging in age from 1 to 87 years old. Health officials noted that an equal number of males and females have become ill across five provinces:

    • Alberta: 9 cases
    • Saskatchewan: 5 cases
    • British Columbia: 3 cases
    • Ontario: 2 cases
    • New Brunswick: 1 case

Officials warn that the actual number of illnesses is likely much higher, as many people with mild symptoms may not seek medical care or be tested.

Recalled Products: What to Check For

The recall involves the following Pillsbury Pizza Pops products sold at retailers across Canada:

General Mills Canada has stated that this is a voluntary recall and that no other Pillsbury products are affected at this time.

    Symptoms and Safety Advice

Food contaminated with E. coli O26 may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause serious illness. Symptoms typically appear three to four days after exposure and include:

    • Severe stomach cramps
    • Watery to bloody diarrhea
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Mild fever and headache

In severe cases, complications can include seizures, strokes, permanent kidney damage, or death. Those at higher risk include pregnant individuals, children under five, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems.

    What You Should Do:

    1. Check your freezer: Immediately dispose of recalled products or return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund.
    2. Sanitize: Clean any containers, countertops, or freezer surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled snacks.
    3. Seek Medical Care: If you experience symptoms after consuming these products, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
    4. Follow Instructions: Always follow the cooking instructions on frozen food packaging, as microwaves and freezers do not reliably kill E. coli.

The CFIA investigation is active, and additional product recalls may be issued as the probe evolves.
