GITLAXT’AAMIKS (NEW AIYANSH), B.C. – The Nisga’a Nation is preparing to host a major celebration for National Indigenous Peoples Day this Friday, June 20, with a full day of events that also marks another historic milestone: the 25th anniversary of the Nisga’a Treaty.
Under the theme “Building on Our Legacy,” the public is invited to the Nisga’a capital of Gitlaxt’aamiks for a community-wide celebration starting at 11:00 a.m.
The family-friendly event promises a packed schedule of fun and culture for all ages.
Highlights of the day include:
- A main parade, joined by Disney characters, and a separate children’s bicycle parade.
- A variety of fun competitions, including a chili cook-off, an arm-wrestling tournament, tricycle races, and even contests for the best wolf howl and raven call.
- An Elder’s BBQ, a dunk tank, a Jail & Bail fundraiser, and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
- Arts and crafts for families to enjoy.
Local radio station CFNR will be broadcasting live on location throughout the day.
The celebration of culture, legacy, and community will continue in Gitlaxt’aamiks with more events scheduled for Saturday, June 21. Everyone from across the Skeena region is welcome to attend.
