SMITHERS / TERRACE / PRINCE RUPERT — Regional school districts entered a critical administrative phase in late January 2026, as boards moved from high-level strategic planning to the ground-level logistics of student registration and facility upgrades.

SD54 (Bulkley Valley) – The Search for Leadership and Food Security

The School District 54 (Bulkley Valley) Board of Education convened for its regular meeting on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the district office in Smithers. A primary focus of the session was the formalization of the search for a new superintendent following the announcement that longtime leader Andy DuRoss will retire at the end of the 2026–2027 school year.

The board is currently reviewing a proposal from HYA Corporation to lead a “thoughtful and seamless” transition over the next 18 months. Beyond leadership, the board addressed the rising “social infrastructure” role of schools:

    • Food Security: The D54 Foundation reported a marked increase in demand for its food pantries and crisis funds, highlighting the cost-of-living strain on local families.
    • Summer Infrastructure: Approval was granted for a construction manager to oversee 2026 renovations, ensuring facilities keep pace with regional growth.
    • Witset Meeting: The board acknowledged its commitment to the Wit’suwit’en Nation, with the January 27 meeting specifically focused on updates to the Strategic Plan and the 2025–2026 Amended Budget.

    CMSD82 – Registration Rollout for 2026-2027

In Coast Mountains School District 82, the week of January 26 marked the official rollout of registration for the 2026–2027 school year.

    • Deadlines: Kindergarten registration opened on January 19 and will run through February 27, 2026.
    • Bilingual Ambition: The district continues to promote its French Immersion and Gitxsanimx Immersionprograms, with the latter offered at Majagaleehl Gali Aks Elementary.
    • Cross-Boundary: Families seeking transfers are encouraged to submit updated cross-boundary application forms now to ensure placement for the fall.

SD52 (Prince Rupert) – Designing for Accessibility

On the coast, School District 52 launched an Accessibility Survey on January 21, 2026, seeking community feedback to identify and remove barriers in local schools. The survey is part of a provincial mandate to create more inclusive built environments and communication systems for students and parents with mobility challenges. The district intends to use the data to inform its next capital budget, prioritizing facility upgrades where they are needed most.
