TERRACE, B.C. – Today, June 12, marks the 127th anniversary of Philippine Independence Day, a day of immense pride and celebration for Filipino communities in the Skeena region and around the world.
Known as “Araw ng Kalayaan,” the day commemorates the Philippines’ declaration of independence from Spanish rule in 1898. While a public holiday in the Philippines, it has also become a major cultural event for the global Filipino diaspora, including the vibrant community here in Northwest B.C.
This year’s official theme is “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.” (Freedom. Future. History.).
Across Canada, the day is being marked with various celebrations. In Ottawa, a flag-raising ceremony was held on Parliament Hill. Tonight in Vancouver, the iconic Sails of Light at Canada Place will be illuminated in the red, white, blue, and yellow of the Philippine flag at 10:00 p.m.
For many, the day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by their ancestors to achieve freedom, and to celebrate the rich culture and heritage of the Philippines through food, music, and family gatherings. It serves as a powerful reminder of the values of nationalism, courage, and unity.
To all our Filipino friends, colleagues, and neighbours in the Skeena region, we wish you a happy and meaningful Independence Day. Maligayang Araw ng Kasarinlan!
