TERRACE, B.C. – The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine (RDKS) has issued a Hazard Notice after the B.C. River Forecast Centre placed several areas under a Flood Watch, indicating that rivers and their tributaries may soon rise to or exceed their banks.

The warning is in effect for the North Coast area, specifically affecting streams and rivers near Stewart, New Aiyansh, Terrace, and Kitimat. This alert follows recent intense rainfall across the region.

    Current Flood Status and Rainfall

A Flood Watch is the second-highest alert level and means that river levels are rising rapidly, and flooding in nearby areas is possible.

    • Terrace Area: While the Skeena and Kitsumkalum Rivers themselves are generally below major flood thresholds, the surrounding tributaries and smaller streams are highly responsive to heavy rainfall. Weather stations near Terrace have recently recorded high precipitation totals, leading to concern for potential localized flooding in low-lying areas.
    • Kitimat Area: The Kitimat River and its tributaries, such as the Little Wedeene River and Hirsch Creek, are known to rise rapidly during these events. Authorities have previously issued a Flood Warning for the Kitimat area due to heavy rain.
    • Weather Conditions: Environment Canada has issued concurrent Rainfall Warnings for the North Coast—including Stewart, Terrace, and Kitimat—with total rainfall amounts expected to be substantial. These conditions increase the risk of localized flooding and erosion.

    Safety Warnings for the Community

The RDKS strongly advises all residents to exercise extreme caution near waterways during this period. Rising water levels increase the risk of dangerous conditions, unstable banks, and submerged roads.

    Public Safety Directives:

    • Avoid riverbanks and streams in the region, as swift-running water poses a significant risk to life safety.
    • Never drive across flooded roads or bridges. Turn around if you encounter high water.
    • Clear storm drains of leaves and debris, especially in urban areas, to reduce the risk of localized urban flooding and water pooling.

The River Forecast Centre continues to monitor the situation, and residents are encouraged to regularly monitor weather alerts and be prepared for conditions to change rapidly.
