TERRACE,BC – Residents of the vast Skeena–Bulkley Valley riding will soon have local access to their new Member of Parliament, with constituency offices in Terrace and Smithers expected to open within the next few weeks.
The openings will come more than two months after the April 28 federal election, which saw the Conservative candidate win the seat, marking the first time the riding has not been represented by the NDP since its creation in 2004.
A spokesperson for the new MP said the delay in opening the offices is due to procedural and administrative backlogs in Ottawa. The House of Commons Administration must approve all aspects of a new MP’s setup—from office locations and staffing to technology—a process that is happening simultaneously for all newly elected members across the country.
“We have staff ready to go,” the spokesperson said. “We just need some more IT set up and then we should be fully functioning.”
The offices will be familiar to many residents, as they are in the same locations used by the previous MP: 112-4716 Lazelle Ave. in Terrace and 1226 Main St. in Smithers.
The newly elected MP, who is from Kitimat, is currently at home with a full schedule of events across the riding. His stated priorities for the term include economic development, Indigenous rights, public safety, and addressing the addictions crisis.
