Terrace Aquatic Centre Closing July 2–19 as City Plans Annual Repairs and Deep Cleaning
By Skeena News
Residents who rely on the Terrace & District Aquatic Centre for swimming, fitness and recreation will face nearly three weeks without access this summer as the facility prepares for its annual maintenance shutdown.
The City of Terrace says the aquatic centre, including both the pool and fitness centre, will close from July 2 to July 19, 2026, with plans to fully reopen on Monday, July 20.
City officials say the closure is part of the facility’s regular annual maintenance schedule rather than an unexpected shutdown. The temporary closure allows staff to carry out repairs, maintenance and deep cleaning work that cannot be completed while the centre remains open.
According to the City, July was selected because it is historically the quietest month for the facility, with many residents away on vacation or spending more time enjoying outdoor activities around the region.
Passholders to Receive Membership Extensions
The City says active memberships will automatically be extended to compensate users for the days lost during the closure.
The annual shutdown affects not only swimmers but also residents who depend on the facility for exercise and wellness.
Families with children enrolled in swimming programs, seniors using aquatic exercise for mobility, fitness centre members and residents who rely on low-impact water activities for rehabilitation will all temporarily lose access during the closure.
Part of an Annual Pattern
The 2026 closure follows a similar pattern seen in previous years.
In 2025, the City announced a summer shutdown from July 6 to July 27 for maintenance, repairs and deep cleaning, with memberships extended for affected users.
In 2024, reports indicated the aquatic centre closed from July 1 to July 19 while crews completed maintenance and upgrades that included pool-system work, grouting and deep cleaning of pool basins and surrounding areas.
Unlike previous years, however, the City’s current notice does not specify exactly what work is scheduled for 2026. The announcement simply refers to “maintenance, repairs and deep cleaning.”
Questions Remain About This Year’s Work
While the City has confirmed the closure dates, details about the specific projects planned during the shutdown have not been released.
It remains unclear whether the work will involve pool systems, filtration equipment, HVAC systems, changerooms, flooring, accessibility improvements or other upgrades.
Questions also remain about whether any swimming lessons, public swims, fitness programs or facility rentals will be rescheduled or cancelled during the closure period.
Residents who use hot tubs, sauna areas or other amenities may also be looking for confirmation that all services will reopen on July 20.
Community Impact
The Terrace & District Aquatic Centre serves as more than just a swimming pool. It is a major recreation hub used by families, seniors, fitness enthusiasts and residents seeking therapeutic or low-impact exercise.
For those staying in Terrace during July, the closure removes one of the city’s key indoor recreation options during the summer season.
The City says scheduling the maintenance period during July minimizes disruption because many residents are travelling or taking advantage of outdoor recreation opportunities.
Skeena News has reached out to the City of Terrace seeking further information about the exact maintenance and repair work planned during the July closure, as well as whether any programs or activities will be rescheduled.
The Terrace & District Aquatic Centre is currently scheduled to reopen on Monday, July 20, 2026.
