TERRACE, B.C. – The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) has announced the appointment of Dr. Michel S. Beaulieu as its new Provost and Vice President Academic. He will officially begin his new role on October 4.

Dr. Beaulieu is making the move to Prince George from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont., where he most recently served as the Associate Vice-Provost (Academic). He has a long history of academic leadership, having spent more than 20 years at Lakehead University in various capacities.

In a press release, Beaulieu expressed his enthusiasm for joining UNBC, which has campuses across Northern British Columbia, including Terrace. “UNBC’s bold vision to re-imagine education, research and learning in the face of a changing future resonates deeply with my commitment to fostering inclusive, innovative and impactful opportunities,” he said. “I look forward to connecting with, listening to and working alongside UNBC’s students, faculty, staff and community partners to provide exceptional learning experiences and further enhance the University’s role as a leader in academic excellence.”

UNBC President Geoff Payne stated that Beaulieu’s selection was the result of a thorough process. “Throughout the selection process, Beaulieu demonstrated a keen understanding of the challenges and opportunities ahead as UNBC works to expand educational pathways for students and empower communities across northern B.C.,” Payne said. “He brings a wealth of experience in academic leadership, innovative program development and relationship-building to advance this work.”

During his two decades at Lakehead, Beaulieu held a variety of leadership positions, including Chair of the Department of History, coordinator of Interdisciplinary Programs in Northern Studies, and Director of two research centers. His contributions to education have earned him numerous honors, including the King Charles III Coronation Medal and the Ontario Historical Society’s Cruikshank Gold Medal.

UNBC President Payne also thanked Bill Owen for his leadership in serving as the interim Provost.
