KITIMAT, B.C. – A University of Northern B.C. (UNBC) PhD candidate is launching the first major study to focus specifically on the human health impacts of industrial air pollution in the Kitimat region.
The multi-phase research will explore how sulphur dioxide (SO₂) emissions affect the health and well-being of people living in Kitimat and the Haisla Nation community of Kitamaat Village, both located near the Rio Tinto aluminum smelter.
The lead researcher, a long-time Terrace resident and nursing instructor, recently presented her work to the District of Kitimat council. She explained that while there is extensive environmental monitoring in the valley, there has been a lack of research focused directly on human health outcomes.
“I can assure you I’m not coming into this research with some foregone conclusion,” the PhD candidate told the council. “It’s to study something that’s going on in a new context. For me, it’s an interesting question because there’s an industrial site that’s very close to human habitation.”
The study is divided into two phases:
- Qualitative Interviews: The first phase, currently underway, involves in-depth interviews with about 30 community members to understand how air quality influences their daily lives.
- Symptom Tracking: The second phase, planned for summer 2026, will have roughly 30 local residents with asthma or COPD track their respiratory symptoms over a three-month period to analyze potential links to SO₂ exposure.
The research is being conducted in partnership with Northern Health, and the researcher has already engaged with the Haisla Health Centre. The study’s findings will be shared with local governments and health authorities to help inform residents about specific risks and provide better advice for people with respiratory conditions.
During the council presentation, one councillor voiced strong support for the project, emphasizing the value of research “that is independent and not funded by industry.”
Recruitment for study participants is expected to begin this autumn.
